1829: Peters the Antipodean lifted 16 men and 10 wagon wheels while his wife and daughter walk a tightrope for a Bowery Theatre!
1879: Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood born. You can visit the first planned parenthood on a tour of the East Village.
1901: Teddy Roosevelt assumes Presidency after assassination of President McKinley. Although other Presidents, including Barry Obama and Franklin Roosevelt, had connections with NYC, in their cases through Columbia, Teddy is the only President born in NYC. He even served as our Police Commisioner.
1947: Jon "Bowzer" Bauman, Rock singer of Sha Na Na born. His band
performed at Columbia College, which they attended, and at Woodstock.
1948: Construction of the United Nations commences.
1975: Pope Paul VI declared NYC's Elizabeth Ann Seton the first U.S.-born saint. You can visit where she had her first miracle and where she did her missionary work on a tour of Downtown.
