1857:   American Chess Association founded in NYC, and it sponsors the first chess championship.



1927:   "You ain't seen nothing yet!The Jazz Singer, 
filmed on Orchard and Hester Streets in the Lower East Side, produced by the nearly bankrupt Warner Brothers astounds audiences as the first 'talkie' sound film, making Warner Brothers rich.


2008:  At the beginning of the Great Recession, the Dow Jones industrial average closed below 10,000 for the first time since 2004.
